The Worst Oil Spills in the History



 These photos shows what would be known as the biggest oil spills in the history, the Gulf War in 1991. It's the largest accidental oil spill in history happened at Persian Gulf in 1991 where it place 240 million gallons of oil into the ocean close to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

It happened when many tankers, port facilities, and storage tanks were destroyed throughout war operations.

The second largest is the blowout of the Ixtoc I exploratory well offshore Mexico in 1979. Mexico recorded the second largest accidental oil spill, gushed one hundred forty million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

In comparison, the wreck of the Exxon Valdez tanker in 1989 which spilled eleven million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound offshore Alaska, and ranks fifty-third on the list of oil spills involving over ten million gallons.

The number of enormous spills which is over 206,500 gallons averaged 24.1 per year from years 1970 to 1979. However the number decreased to 6.9 per year from the year 1990 till 2000.
